France secured their place in the Paris 2024 Olympic men’s football semi-finals with a tense 1-0 victory over Argentina in Bordeaux.
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta’s early header proved to be the difference, despite a late French goal being disallowed by VAR.
The match was marred by crowd hostility, with French fans booing the Argentine national anthem and confrontations between players after the final whistle.
Spain comfortably defeated Japan 3-0 in Lyon, with Fermin Lopez scoring twice. Abel Ruiz added a third late in the game to seal victory for the European side.
In the other quarter-finals, Morocco produced a dominant performance to thrash the United States 4-0, booking their place in the semi-finals for the first time. Egypt overcame Paraguay 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to set up a semi-final clash with France.
