Spain’s Euro 2024-winning captain Alvaro Morata and midfielder Rodri have been handed one-match bans by UEFA for chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish” during their victory celebrations.
The chanting took place in front of tens of thousands of Spain fans in Cibeles Square, Madrid on 15 July as players celebrated their 2-1 Euro 2024 final victory over England.
The pair were involved in the controversial incident after Spain defeated England in the final last month. Their actions sparked a complaint from the Gibraltar Football Association, which deemed the chants “provocative and insulting.”
UEFA has ruled that the players breached conduct regulations and brought the sport into disrepute. As a result, both Morata and Rodri will miss Spain’s upcoming Nations League match against Serbia.
The Gibraltar-Spain territorial dispute is a long-standing issue, with Spain claiming sovereignty over the British territory. The incident has reignited tensions between the two sides.
