Ama Daaku, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communication team, has made a strong statement regarding illegal mining activities, particularly those that occur near water bodies.
According to her, these activities have destroyed our water bodies and the need for urgent measures to address it.
During an interview on the Angel Morning Show (AMS), she expressed her concerns about the environmental damage caused by these activities.
“The youth may not stop mining, but it must be done the right way,” she said, highlighting the destruction of land without even knowing if there is gold present.
Daaku suggested that stricter measures should be enforced to protect the environment.
“We should not allow mining near our water bodies. The military should be empowered to patrol these areas by air, and if anyone is caught using a ‘chanfan’ machine to extract gold from the ground, they should be shot on sight,” she stated.
She further elaborated that mining has been a part of the country’s history for over 400 years, traditionally done on land. However, she condemned those who have now taken to mining in water bodies, which are essential for drinking, calling them “wicked” individuals who deserve harsh punishment.
“We need to talk to our people and prevent them from mining in water bodies. Instead, they should seek proper gold mining methods on land,” she concluded.
