Besiktas part ways with Ghana defender Daniel Amartey

Turkish club Besiktas have officially announced the termination of their contract with Ghana defender Daniel Amartey by mutual agreement.

The 29-year-old, who joined the club in 2023 on a two-year deal, is now a free agent.

Amartey’s exit follows a recent transfer saga between the player and the club. Besiktas had reportedly been exploring options to sell the centre-back, who had one year left on his contract.

However, complications arose when the defender allegedly refused to travel for a potential transfer, with the club’s spokesperson, Huseyin Yucel, claiming that Amartey was only interested in a move to England, despite the closure of the transfer window.

Amartey, in response, denied these accusations, describing them as “untrue.”

In a statement released on Saturday, Besiktas confirmed: “The contract between our club and professional football player Daniel Amartey has been terminated by mutual agreement.”

Daniel Amartey has not featured for Besiktas this season and now has the freedom to join any club of his choice. The Ghana international was previously part of Leicester City’s historic Premier League-winning squad in the 2015/16 season and has made 55 appearances for the Black Stars.

His most recent call-up to the national team was for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast earlier this year. The experienced defender will now be exploring new opportunities as a free agent.
