Ghana Premier League champions Medeama suffered a resounding defeat against Al Ahly in their opening group stage game of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League.
Three second-half goals from the reigning champions did the damage against the Ghanaian side in Cairo on Saturday night.
Despite a strong defensive performance from Medeama in the first half, Al Ahly took the lead in the 66th minute when Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ Abdel-Moneim scored with a header from within the box, capitalising on Emam Ashour’s excellent setup.
Hussien El-Shahat’s excellent goal from close range extended Al Ahly’s lead in the 75th minute.
Salah Mohsen wrapped up the win heading in a precise assist from outstanding midfielder Mohamed ‘Afsha’ Magdi from the right wing.
Following the dominant performance, Al Ahly now leads Group D with three points, sharing the lead with Algeria’s Chabab Belouizdad, who defeated Tanzania’s Young Africans 3-0 on Friday.
Medeama are making their debut appearance in the competition and will face CR Belouizdad at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi in their next game.
