Ian Maatsen has completed his move to Aston Villa from Chelsea.
The 22-year-old defender joins Villa ahead of the new season after uncertainty about his future at Chelsea.
Maatsen, originally signed from PSV Eindhoven in 2019, spent time on loan at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Burnley, and Borussia Dortmund before moving to Villa.
Last season, Maatsen featured for Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea in pre-season but was loaned to Dortmund, where he impressed by helping the German club reach the Champions League final, ultimately losing to Real Madrid.
His performance earned him a spot in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season.
Aston Villa announced the signing with enthusiasm, highlighting Maatsen’s achievements and his role in Dortmund’s successful run. The club statement read, “Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea. Welcome, Ian!”
Chelsea also acknowledged his departure, praising his contributions and development during his six-year stay. Their statement read, “Ian Maatsen has left Chelsea and completed a permanent transfer to Aston Villa. We thank Ian for all his efforts at Stamford Bridge and wish him well for the future.”
Maatsen, currently with the Netherlands at the European Championship in Germany, is Unai Emery’s second summer signing for Villa.
