FIFA revealed a long-term collaboration with Saudi Arabian state-controlled petroleum and natural gas firm, Aramco.
This partnership extends through 2027, granting Aramco sponsorship privileges for both the Men’s World Cup in 2026 and the Women’s World Cup held the subsequent year.
Aramco boasts existing relationships within Formula One racing and collaborates with the International Cricket Council (ICC).
FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised Aramco, stating, “Aramco has a strong track record of supporting world-class events, but also a focus on developing grassroots sport initiatives.”
This alliance further solidifies Saudi Arabia’s presence and impact on global sports, drawing criticism from certain quarters labeling such actions as ‘sportswashing.’
Critics argue that these investments aim to enhance Saudi Arabia’s worldwide standing and divert attention from human rights concerns.
A study released in November 2023 identified 312 separate sponsorship arrangements between Saudi Arabia and various sports encompassing 21 distinct disciplines.
Saudi Arabia stands alone as the lone contender vying for hosting rights for the 2034 World Cup, having formally initiated their pursuit in March soon after Australia withdrew its candidacy in October. Anticipation builds as FIFA prepares to announce the winning host nation sometime this year.
