Asante Kotoko emerged victorious in the inaugural Democracy Cup, defeating arch-rivals Hearts of Oak 2-1 in a thrilling match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
This victory extends Kotoko’s recent dominance over the Phobians, having secured consecutive wins over them in the recently concluded season.
The match started with high intensity, and it was Kotoko who struck first. Justice Blay opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a controversial decision, giving the Porcupine Warriors the lead as they headed into the halftime break.
The penalty decision sparked debates among fans and analysts, but Blay kept his cool to convert it.
Hearts of Oak, determined to fight back, found their equaliser in the second half through Asamoah Boateng. The goal reignited the contest, with both teams pushing hard for the win. However, Kotoko’s resilience shone through as Amidu restored their lead, ensuring victory and claiming the trophy for his team.

The victory not only boosts Kotoko’s morale but also secures them a friendly match against Major League Soccer’s DC United. The game, marking Ghana’s 30th anniversary of parliamentary democracy, added extra significance to the already fierce rivalry.
In a curtain-raiser to the main event, a team of Members of Parliament defeated a select group of former Black Stars players by 3-1, setting the tone for a day of football festivities.
