Lee Carsley is poised to become the interim manager of the England men’s national team for their upcoming Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September.
The former midfielder, who enjoyed a successful playing career in the Premier League, has been in charge of England’s Under-21s since 2021, guiding the team to their first European Championship title in 39 years last year.
This appointment follows the resignation of Gareth Southgate after England’s Euro 2024 final defeat. While the FA continues its search for a permanent replacement, Carsley’s experience with the England setup and recent success with the Under-21s make him a suitable choice for the interim role.
The path from managing England’s youth team to taking charge of the senior side has been followed by several previous managers, including Howard Wilkinson, Stuart Pearce, and Gareth Southgate himself.
Carsley, 50, is a former Premier League midfielder who played for clubs including Derby and Everton in a 17-year career.
He moved into management and took charge of Coventry, Brentford and Birmingham on a caretaker basis before joining the England set-up in 2020.
