Morocco secured a 2-1 victory over Argentina in their Olympic Games men’s football match, after a late equaliser was controversially ruled out.
The match got off to a flying start for Morocco, with Soufiane Rahimi scoring twice in the first half to give the Atlas Lions a commanding 2-0 lead. Rahimi’s goals came in the 39th and 51st minutes, with the second being a penalty that left Argentina goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli with no chance.
Argentina pulled a goal back in the 68th minute through Giuliano Simeone, but Morocco looked set to hold on for a historic victory.
However, deep into stoppage time, Christian Medina bundled the ball home from virtually on the goalline to level the scores at 2-2.
But in a stunning turn of events, the equaliser was ruled out over two hours after the goal was scored, following chaos and protests from Morocco fans who had invaded the pitch.
The match was subsequently abandoned and the final moments played out behind closed doors.
The controversy will likely overshadow what was an impressive performance from the Atlas Lions, who now face Ukraine in their next match. Argentina, meanwhile, will look to bounce back against Iraq on Saturday.
