Newcastle determined to keep Eddie Howe amid England FA Interest

Newcastle United’s chief executive, Darren Eales, has affirmed the club’s resolve to retain Eddie Howe, despite speculation linking him with the England manager’s job following Gareth Southgate’s resignation.

Howe, 46, has emerged as a leading candidate to take over from Southgate, who resigned after Spain’s victory over England in the Euro 2024 final.

When asked about the possibility of an approach from the Football Association (FA), Eales was unequivocal in his response. “Yes, absolutely. We’re on an exciting journey, and as far as we’re concerned, Eddie is the man to lead us on that.”

Eales emphasised the club’s commitment to Howe, who signed a long-term contract extension in 2022 after guiding Newcastle away from relegation.

“For us, he’s exactly the right man for the project we are on at Newcastle United, and that is why we are committed to a long-term deal with him. That’s why we think he’s the right man for Newcastle. We love him.”

Howe was appointed Newcastle manager in 2021 and has been instrumental in the club’s recent resurgence.

Given his long-term contract, Eales indicated that the club would be entitled to compensation should Howe decide to replace Southgate, although no specific figure was mentioned.

England are scheduled to play the Republic of Ireland on 7 September in the Nations League, with an interim manager likely to be in charge if the FA has not yet appointed Southgate’s successor.
