Italy’s reign as European champions came to a crashing end as a dominant Switzerland secured a convincing 2-0 victory in their last-16 clash.
Switzerland asserted their control from the outset. The impressive Ruben Vargas orchestrated the first goal, delivering a cross for Remo Freuler who slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Vargas himself doubled the lead just after halftime, curling a sublime effort into the top corner after receiving a pass from Michel Aebischer.
Italy’s attacking efforts were largely absent throughout the match. They only managed their first shot on target in the 73rd minute, and their closest chance before that came from an own-goal attempt by Switzerland’s Fabian Schar.
Although Gianluca Scamacca rattled the woodwork late on, the Italian attack never truly threatened a comeback, leaving their Euro 2024 campaign in Germany a major disappointment.
Meanwhile, Switzerland’s passionate supporters in Berlin erupted in celebration. They now set their sights on Dusseldorf, where they will face the victor of England’s upcoming match against Slovakia on July 6th.
