Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of Vincent Kompany as their new manager on a three-year contract.

The 38-year-old Belgian has left Burnley to take the helm at the German club, succeeding Thomas Tuchel.

Following a tumultuous search for a new manager, which saw rejections from Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, and Ralf Rangnick, Bayern Munich turned to Kompany.

Their pursuit of Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace was also rebuffed, and a potential reunion with Hansi Flick was ruled out. Despite speculation about a possible U-turn for Tuchel, he ultimately decided against staying with the club.

Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich was finalised after the two clubs agreed on a compensation fee, believed to be £10.2 million.

The former Manchester City defender expressed his excitement about joining Bayern Munich, stating, “It’s a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football.”

Under Kompany’s management, Burnley won the Championship in the 2022-23 season, but they faced relegation from the Premier League this season after finishing 19th.

Kompany, who retired from playing in 2020, initially joined Burnley from Anderlecht in 2022 and had signed a five-year contract extension with the Clarets last year.

Burnley expressed their initial confidence in retaining Vincent Kompany, but the “changing dynamics of the situation” ultimately led to his departure. Kompany’s future had been a subject of speculation, particularly after he refused to comment on it following Burnley’s home defeat by Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season.

Bayern Munich will look to Kompany to bring stability and success to the club after a disappointing third-place finish in the Bundesliga, their worst league position since the 2010-11 season.
