Ex-Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales says he faces trial over kiss ‘because I am a man.’
The disgraced ex-FA boss sparked controversy at the 2023 Women’s World Cup final when planting a kiss onto the lips of ex-Barcelona star Hermoso as Spain celebrated capturing a global crown.
At what should have been a time of great celebration for Spain, a historic Women’s World Cup win has been overshadowed by a sexism scandal that has dominated global headlines.
Spanish forward, Jenni Hermoso and her teammates said the kiss was demeaning and not consensual.
The Spanish government, football’s world governing body FIFA, the United Nations and countless players and clubs have condemned Rubiales’ behaviour. Ultimately, he was subjected to scrutiny forcing Rubiales to ultimately resign.
“You cannot question Jennifer Hermoso, but you can question me – because I am a man? For me there is no crime against Jennifer Hermoso.” Said Rubiales.

Spanish prosecutors want the Former FA President to be jailed for two and a half years, with Rubiales potentially facing a charge of coercion in addition to the one for sexual assault.
Additionally, he was arrested earlier on Wednesday as part of an unconnected corruption investigation into his career after he arrived in Madrid from the Dominican Republic.
